Geophysical Inversion Group

at Centre for Earth Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Karnataka 560012

We aim to improve our understanding of Earth’s internal structure, seismic hazards, and geodynamic processes by developing advanced mathematical and computational techniques to process and analyze large amounts of seismic data collected from earthquake recordings, seismic surveys, and ambient noise sources.

Big Data Seismology

Our research group is dedicated to advancing the emerging field of big data seismology, which involves leveraging large and complex seismic datasets to improve our understanding of the Earth’s subsurface and seismic sources.

Imaging

Our research focuses on seismic imaging, which involves analyzing recordings of seismic waves to gain insights into the geological structures beneath the Earth’s surface. We strive to improve the accuracy and reliability of this method using passive sources, in order to facilitate a more comprehensive understanding of the subsurface.

Interferometry

We specialize in seismic interferometry, which involves studying interference patterns between pairs of noise signals to extract valuable information about subsurface structures. Our team is currently developing algorithms using symmetric autoencoding to isolate the spatial coherence in the seismic wavefield.

Join Us!

We are actively looking for motivated students and post-docs to join our group. We value diversity and are open to people of all gender, caste, sexual orientation, race, physical abilities, and religions. Some guidelines are given below. In any case, consider writing an email to discuss possibilities if you would like to work with us.

Postdocs

You can join us through the CV Raman, the most prestigious postdoc fellowship in India, and the Institute of Eminence (IoE) Postdoctoral Fellowships. Doctorates with prior experience in the field of seismology, machine learning, deep learning, signal processing, applied mathematics and passion to work with complex geophysical systems are encouraged to apply. A strong programming experience is necessary. Please look here for more details on the application procedure and salary etc.

PhD

The PhD admissions usually have to go through the procedures set up by IISc, followed by an interview with Center for Earth Sciences. There is a possibility of joining our group through the Interdisciplinary Mathematical Sciences (Computational Engineering Stream) program, visit here for more details on our project proposal.

Research Fellows

If you are recent graduate and determined to kickstart your research career in computational geophysics, we are here to support you. We expect that you are motivated, work with us for at least an year, and bring some of the research ideas to life. Depending on your performance, you may be supported to continue with a PhD in our institute.
